Forgoing the complexity (since I'm not writing it!) I would rather see the
ability to vote on a messages than threads (or have them separate, with the
individual message votes contributing in part to the thread score).
A message could be rated, I think, on two aspects: "general applicability"

Maybe a Wish list/bug report section as well. Should make an easy
reference if someone is trying to find out about a feature or error.

The CSS list I'm on has an accompanying wiki. They also have clearly posted

Right. Think of how many times "I forgot my CF admin password..what do I
do?" gets asked.

On this list there are threads that are important in the realm of CF or
general. On the tech lists, the importance is based on the simple question
of usefulness. If it's a simple question but one that everyone asks, then
its important.

I'm not sure that any thread is really more important than another on this particular list. Maybe on this list have it go by popularity, then recency? Just a thought.
With the more technical forums, again how do you determine importance. I've asked some comparatively dumb-a$$ questions, but to me
Actually, since some people's description of a problem might be a little
different (although, how many ways you can say "Hey, did anyone hear
about Microsoft buying Macromedia?") - that "Recently Answered" would be
most useful if it had a link to the discussion as well.

Trollbait would be limited to this list while a previously answered link
would be useful in general. I think that means we need some volunteers
to
rate the posts and list previous answers and the like.

I think I would like the democracy of everybody being able to vote on the importance of a thread, but maybe some voters' opinions have more weight then others.
Something I've always felt should be on lists like this is the ability to actually move threads to more appropriate locations. Is it to
"Trollbait" and "Learn to Google"
:-)
Seriously, a "recently answered, check archives" kind of thing would
probably be good as well.
