I shimmed the starter and it got better for a while
but now
it's hitting the flexplate again when I try to
start.
It is as if the starters teeth are hitting the
flexplates teeth.
The starter is quite new, a year or so. It's a
Powermaster "mini starter"
Any ideas?

I had a similar problem but it turned out to be a missing lock ring on the end
of
the shaft that the starter gear slides on when you crank.
It sled to far and continued cranking and cranking until i pulled the battery
cable.

replaced the forward lamp harness & engine harness.

and all you hook up is the purple wire and the battery. When you do an
HEI conversion, replace the ballast wires for the coil with a single Red wire
for power to the HEI
