With a Posi-Traction rear end when you turn one drum and the other one
turns the same number of turns in the same direction you can just rotate
the tires
wondering the rear end ratio,
the drum diameter is 12" - 1 spin on the drum = 1 3/4 on the drive shaft

I am in the market for new rear end gears for my 70 Nova that now has a 2.56
(stock). I plan to get a 3.08 posi since I have a 700-R4 and the rpm's are
only 1,450 @ 60 mph now and the 3.08 should raise that to 1,740. This car has

know you have to set things like backlash etc. Way out of my league
obviously. My main goal here is to try to find some parts that will work
and not pay the un-godly money that some of the usual restoration

The preload is set using the torque of the nut holding the yoke in place. To get the yoke off, leave the nut on so that it is flush with the end of the pinion shaft. Then grab a hold of the yoke with one hand and tap the nut/pinion with a hammer until the yoke pops off, just make sure you

Don't forget about the preload on the pinion when you take the yoke nut off. You can't pry on the yoke itself or you will damage it and throw it off balance resulting in a vibration. A big impact gun is also required for this job.

Sounds like you have a bad pinion seal. If you have never taken a rear apart before, I suggest you let someone that knows what they are doing fix it. Getting that yoke off can be a pain in the rear [pun intended :-)].

Jack up the rear and rotate 1 wheel. The other wheel
should rotate in the same direction and it should take
about 3-3/4 wheel revolutions for 1 driveshaft
revolution. If this doesn't happen your next step is to
remove the cover and check the gear numbers as well as
the existence of a posi c
I am picking up a numbers matching '66 SS (138) this weekend. The car is
being represented as having a 3.73 posi rear end and I know that code is
"CI", but where can I physically verify this on the car to make sure this
is what is actually on it?

I replaced the carrier bearings today and it

I believe that adjustable upper control arms may help you. You can adjust pinion
angle. Are your control arm bushings in decent shape? Recently lots of traffic at
chevelle tech on BMR/BNR adjustable arms. Supposedly very good pricing compared tot
the big names.

I don’t think you will do any damage by not breaking in the posi, it will just make a god awful racket longer than if you did. Mine settled down after about 3 months of daily use, so a weekend car may stay stiff for a bit longer. Also

i did use the ford posi additive was told it was good stuff , well i did read some where in the installation manual to do just that of the figure 8 but i dont think i did i dont really drive the car that much lots of rain lately here in mass, you think its to late for the figu

The rubbing sound is most likely from the posi unit. Did you use the ‘limited slip’ additive when you put the diff oil in? If you did put in the additive you may also have some chattering of the clutches as they get broken in. When I put
