misconception present. "importing" in dt only involves adding an existing
file to the database, library.db. It does not involve moving a file from
its present location to another location, ie: sd card to local disk.
copy or move your images from camers/sd card/... to a physical dr
experience "cryptic icons".
there exists a shell script to remove them from your library:
/usr/share/darktable/tools/purge_non_existing_images.sh
and from your cache:

Have absolutely no idea what you are doing wrong. The darktable web site
prominently lists a url to access the 3.0 version manual in pdf form:
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/download/
and
deleting the xmp file removes all record of any editing you have done, so
dt cannot apply cropping as you have removed all record of it.
perhaps you need to removing the image from dt, then merge the tagging
information to the existing xmp file and then reimport the image.

Do what you want with exported images, you have an original now so you can

And a bonus, no need to research exiftool/exiv2 and craft commandline

thoughts.
fwiw: I have not had the occasion to do this in my ~10 years of using dt.

what is the function of and how does one access the "catagories" lable
which appears at the bottom of the "image information" section on the left
lighttable panel? I cannot find such a field using exiftool or exiv2 nor
does darktable manual explain such a field.

I do not observe that but I do loose the selection (goes to no images
selected) if I add a star(s) to an image inside or outside the selection.
I would say that is an unexpected and undesired result and deserves a bug
report.

> selecting non existent or skull images from gui?
available on dt site:
/usr/share/darktable/tools/purge_non_existing_images.sh
I believe that will help you and more quickly/easily than recreating your
db...

I use "the hard way" on openSUSE Tw and ha
tions (snapshots, history, etc... ).
it is so that module parameters are not inadvertedly changed. the
scrollbar is for scrolling, the mouse wheel when over a module changes
parameters.
