How much content did you have already? If none, I'd recommend dropping
and recreating the db from scratch, otherwise, there are tricks you
can do with pg_dump and psql to load the old data into a newly created
dspace database.

this folder has to owned by postgres.

JAR has been placed in [DSpace]/lib.
However, I see also that Tomcat is running on the Gnu JRE, which is
sometimes thought to be a source of problems. More people will be
able to help you if you can use the Sun JRE.

Yes, there is a problem with PG 8.3 and DSpace 1.4.2; PG 8.3 changed
the default typecasting of certain literals in SQL.
DSpace 1.5.X will work with PG 8.3, and DSpace 1.4.2 will work with
earlier versions of PG.
