You just have to create such a file, put the right mplayer-options in it
and name the fxd file after the video file.
In this case the file must be named "Batman_Dead_End.fxd".

You need to set the following variable in local_conf.py:
IMAGEVIEWER_DURATION
by default it is set to 0, which means, you have to press a key to continue
with the next image.
I have just fallen over this by chance while looking for something else.

overwrite the things in freevo_config.py.
What exactly do you want to change?

I was worried that it will need a lot of "try and error" before it is working.

Did you change anything in freevo_conf.py? (You should not!)
Have a look at the output of " freevo plugins -l".
Is the plugin rom_drives.rom_items marked as active?
