I got it figured out last night with the help of someone on Gentoo IRC help.
The drivers were compiled as modules, which only works if you have an initial
ramdisk.
Once I compiled the correct SATA driver into the kernel, it found the drive and
allowed me to boot.

That's not that big of a difference...Also, Gentoo/Linux does not have
powersaving for every device like Windows XP...it's writing to the hard
drive more often and it doesn't spin as much down when it's not in use to

The problem turned out to be hardware related. I moved the primary SATA hard
drive cable from SATA4 to SATA1, and that fixed the problem. One fresh install
later and I was up and running.

For my K/V/M (keyboard, video, mouse) to all work snappy with the new
Xorg, I made sure to include these items in my /etc/make.conf:
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse joystick"
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia v4l vesa"
My Logitech mouse was acting crappy until I added those lines.

You are correct, sir. Read times move at a nice clip - but untar/writes
seem to get cut almost in half. Just an observation - as I do not have
any solid data analysis atm - just a matter of scratching my skull
whilst I listen to what seems to be some serious HD churning.
