I apologize for sending some incorrect information about Convention
refunds. Although we do not wish to encourage refunds, in cases where
a refund is necessary, here is the correct information:
Refund requests must be submitted in a signed letter prior to June 1, 2009,
and are subject to a $50
A refund can be made for registration if requested a certain amount
of time before the convention. I believe a $25 amount is withheld.
After a certain date we have to make guarantees to the hotel, so full
refunds are difficult.

Yes, Cleveland does have a rapid transit system, but unfortunately it
does not go out to where the hotel is located. There is also a bus
system. One could take the rapid to the end of the Blue Line (Van
Aken) and then transfer to a bus that goes to Tri-C East (Cuyahoga

I'm not a librarian and unless the convention comes to Israel, probably
will never attend one, but I've been following this conversation for the
past couple of years - so here's my 2 cents!
There are many universities in major cities - this may answer a number of
the problems
The discussion about convention costs has brought up several very good
ideas that should be investigated. I wonder whether, with our membership
renewal forms, we could poll the membership about convention attendance.
Would those who haven't attended in the past attend if the cost were
Perhaps what is needed is an alternative for those who can't stay at
hotels, eg. home hospitality, or a Y. The airfare is always a big one, but
JetBlue is quite a deal. Last year, we in New York hosted the
convention. I offered my apt. in Brooklyn, but got no takers. Needless to
say, I was
I agree with Naomi. I've attended conferences on college campuses and
they are very successful. Realistically, people do not have time to
tour the city in which the conference is held and do justice to the many
sessions offered at the conference. So why not be at a location without

participate in the annual AJL Convention. Given the high registration fees,
the high hotel costs and then the travel to the location, a very limited

What is the goal of the AJL Convention? Isn't it to bring Judaica
librarians together to share professional knowledge and trends? The costs
to go to these annual meetings are incredibly high.
