We have only testing HPLIP with HP JetDirect boxes. Other vendors' boxes

able to get any box to print, but other items like scanning, faxing,

what is standard. You'll need to edit the file
/usr/share/hplip/data/xml/models.xml, find the reference for
deskjet_5550 and change it to hp_deskjet_5550, then save the file, and

Try using snmpwalk, this will verify if the snmp is working correctly:
you may need to install the package: net-snmp-utils
then run in a terminal:

I've tested the Photosmart 3310 extensively. I'm thinking that perhaps
your install did not complete successfully. If possible go to the hplip
tar ball directory and run make uninstall, then rm -rf /usr/share/hplip
and then reinstall using the instructions at
http://hplip.sourceforge

lsmod | grep ppdev
ppdev needs to be loaded in the kernel for parallel support to function.
If ppdev is not loaded run:
modprobe ppdev
