I think I've gotten all my computer's quirks fixed. In attempting to get iWork to work, I tried all the usual things and eventually deleted the System caches. This solved many problems. Now all seems OK. Apple's Mail application works both to receive and send, but meanwhile I've gotten use to T

I figured it out. First it doesn't work in Thunderbird In other applications (AppleWorks) the contextual menu has Check Selection Spelling. I was looking for the word Dictionary and couldn't see the forest for the trees. Not that this knowledge will improve my spelling, but thanks for the tip.
