are available now are analog amplifiers with built-in D/A convertors. Some
of the high-end models use DSP for level, tone/equalization, reverb, etc,

You can use regular rechargeable, but you probably can't charge them
inside the unit. Rechargeable battery packs usually have additional
connections, inside the packaging/wrapping, that connect the internal
terminals and the charging unit.
