Got my answer from the W124 C&B manual. Looks like headlights/fog/backup lights all light only when turned on (the failure indicator, that is.) Brake and turn signal lights will cause it to be on at all times until the lamp is replaced. He said he checked the turn signals, but I'll have to see

Yeah I looked into that, you need to count the number of teeth on the gears in there, apparently they used different gearsets in different (or maybe even the same) years. If I recall a gear set was like $70, some guy decided to make them after having problems, so it is a fairly limited market
