I'm going nuts trying to seat the beads on a new set of tires on my lawn
tractor. The wheel rim is 7-8 inches wide but the beads on the new tires
sit about 4 inches apart when relaxed. I can easily pull the beads apart to
fit the wheel but I can't get them to stay that way while I add air. I

Excessive vibration can cause loosening. Things like a bad
diode, damaged pulley, etc.

That's what I meant when I said they didn't play well together: brake
fluid with water in it does not do what brake fluid is supposed to do,

housing on the driver's side if I remember correctly. The usual
culprit is the connector in the wiring harness, not the pickup (hard
to kill a coil sealed in a metal tube, eh?).

Water and brake fluid play together VERY well -- that's why you should
change it fairly often. The fluid absorbs water (it's a poly-ol base
of some sort, or poly-glycol) and when it gets really hot, the water
boils out causing a loss of braking. It also corrodes things badly.

Your alternator is going bad -- my old 22D did that, and when I took
it in to get it fixed (it eventually stopped charging well) all I got
back was the case. Bearings were shot and the rotor was eating the
stator, caused huge amounts of drag and therefore wearing the belt out.

You want to see how far the V belt goes into the pulley, generally when
everything is new the top of the V belt will be flush with the top of
the pulley.
You can also have a look at the V in the pulley, if it is shiny at the
bottom, you know you have a problem.

Sometimes it happens that the pulley V is worn so bad the belt only
grips on the bottom, check that.
If the pulleys are good, I would suggest a new quality belt.
There is no oil or such leaking onto it?

I keeps coming back, alternator belt. I keep tightening it at least twice a
year and it likes to loosen up. This is getting old and the squeal is grating
on my nerves and probably my neighbor's too (ask Jon).
