If they are not hot, the ether will not be ignited by them. If tbey are hot, ether should not be needed. I only really used it in the 1963 190d when less than 10deg and nonsynthetic oil. The 85 has always fired off no matter the weather with a couple of glow cycles, but it always runs synthetic.

I think you're correct in that getting the delivery valves right is primarily going to result in (1) no external leaks and (2) a smooth idle. No tuning aspect to the job. There must be some other work (other than the glow plugs) that is responsible for the change in performance. -
