The thought is that oil develops acids from interaction with moisture while just sitting there due to temp/humidity changes. Change the oil per the calendar just to keep corrosion down. IIRC, Amsoil is the only one that makes a pure synthetic oil since the lawsuit that Mobil lost when claiming that the blended oil could not be labeled synthetic. Randy, I would be surprised if a bottom filter like that could coat the engine bay. Top side oil filter would have made a very obvious mess. Forgetting to put the oil cap on the valve cover really makes a huge mess of things and will cause long term oil seeping unless fully washed. Oil cooler

I expect you are right but he will have the oil filter up top. So, if the gasket was leaking the oil might leak out higher up than it would on my engine. However, having read some of the other posts, I am thinking that the cooler hoses are the likely culprit and waiting to hear if it is true.
