I had a little time today, so I decided to FINALLY address the problem with
my 300CD's turn signal switch. It doesn't stay in position without being
held there which applies to both the left and right turn positions. I
pulled the switch from the column, but I couldn't

You must be talking about the AMC Eagle. The 6 cylinder engine were 4.2L
258 CID, and many had rear main seal problems including the one that we had.
It was a wonderful winter car while living in Bend, OR.

in the late 70's were rwd models. I know that they put v6's in the early
Sunbirds, Monzas and Skyhawks, but I don't know what 4 cyl engine was

Actually, it sounds like something's being thrown around externally rather
than inside the engine. The harmonic balancer sounds like a definite
possibility, or perhaps an accessory. Hopefully, a closer look reveals
something obvious and easily fixable.

Hahahahahahaha! It's amazing the claims of MPG and of money spent to
convert to biodiesel when all it takes is viton fuel lines and only when
running B100. One is better off hunting in the Southwest or just about
anywhere other than the rust belt for a good MB diesel at a reasonable
price.
$150 is pretty good for an engine! If it runs, that's even better. There
are a few PNP yards within 20 miles of my house, so if things get bad with
this little 220D engine, I'll certainly be checking into that.

Just as the subject line says, TIMING IS EVERYTHING! I took the valve cover
off this little 220D today and checked things over. It appears that the
TIMING is far from perfect right now. There are points in the engine
revolution where the chain can be lifted away from the cam sprocket

engine? Could this alone cause the engine not to start by throwing the
timing off that much? How easily can the tensioner be replaced?

I think that changing sheet metal and the rad would be MUCH easier than
pulling the engine/tranny out of both cars and swapping them. It may very
well have some hidden frame damage which would necessitate the engine/tranny
swap. Either way, the stick would be much funner to drive.
