Installed on the D: drive. Set up an .ini pointing at D: drive
Ran D:\mysql\bin\mysqld
When I then ran mysqlshow I only had the test database, not the mysql database as the
documentation said I should.
I then deleted everything and installed again,

Anyway, at first blush I agree with you. When you installed mysql did you

Yea, I have to agree its not starting.
Alright, you're probably already in the /usr/local/mysql or you would've
seen a nasty message reminding you to execute the mysqld_safe
and if not, I can tell you what I've done not to get it - make sense?
Take a look at the error log and let us know what is says.

I'm having a devil of a time installing mysql 3.23.51 on SuSE 8 from the
source
tarball. I did ./config, then make.
There are the last few lines from make:

I have tried to change the zero to letter O and still have this problem.
