As a hack, you can add the command you want to run to the end of the
rc.local file, located at /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
This is where I load some modules in since the modules don't want to load
in the correct order... (it attempts to load sound.o before uart.o, which
sound requires, so I just load
A mirror is a download site which contains a copy of files at some other
site, so for example, the "Update" program asks you to select a 'mirror'
of the main mandrake download site so that you can choose a site that may
be closer (and therefore perhaps faster) to download from, as well as

If you switch your Runlevel from 3 to 5 on the default distro, you will
get a screen from XDM which has a pull down menu to select the window
environment. Switching runlevels means your machine will run in X all the
time.

To fix the unmount problems, get the kernel updates and initscript updates
either by direct ftp or when in Xwindows. See the mandrake web page for
further details, under the updates section. This fixes the partition busy
message and help you reboot correctly.

I know I have seen this posted before, so I went back to the archive to

OK, well, I can't help you with any of the stuff below =-( BUT, I can tell

Try jumping to one of the other virtual terminals by pressing

I have also seen this posted a time or two, with the same answer, but

If a user mounts a CD, an entry is made to /etc/mtab indicating what
happened, the parameters, which user, and the like.
However, if a user mounts a cd and then logs out, no other users except
for that person and root can unmount it, presumably because the mtab file
is check to see who mounted
This is an extremely insignificant question, so consider yourself warned:
In both the Windows version and the version on the old ultrix servers we

Any solutions? It's one of
I have an Diamond TNT2 and have never had a problem with it at all, and as
shown below from the FAQ on nvidia's web page, it's pretty clear that
there is indeed acceleration. Get full details and the modified drivers

Note: Not only did nvidia GPL their drivers, 3DFX has not, and
Thanks to Ken, Steve, Matt, and others for their assistance with that last

And I'm not aware of a true fix, but see if this helps (what I was told on
another list when I asked this). Run X in another color depth, ie "startx

the default color depth be 16 all the
Is it possible (I'm not really an apache person) that you are missing an
entry to you hosts file, as well as the config files? My hosts file looks
like the following: (edited for paranoia)
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
128.95.112.1pandora.blah.blah.edu
Perhaps you are trying to hard (often the case when I have frustrated
myself to death with a problem!). There are two programs available which
can assist you by automatically writing a xf86config file.
Xconfigurator is the one run by the initial install process, and allows
the test at the end
Well, it's hard to tell with what you have here where to start, but I know
one very common problem when using boot disks is that they have a very
high failure rate (boot disks and images are VERY sensitive to minor

Well, perhaps I am completely misunderstanding you, but I think that you
are very confused as to what is what, which is ok, but sort of hard to do

Yes, that's precisely what it means. I don't have further details, like
how to tweak that to check more or less frequently, but the kernel will do
quick checks on all partitions after a number of reboots.

I can't tell or remember if the last time I recompiled my kernel I put
scsi emulation in or not, and I have since modified the "make xconfig"
file, so even though it's currently checked, I can't tell if it's really
in the one I'm running.
Is there a way to ask the kernel about that?
Later,
OK, so normally to get into x after rebooting, I put in the following
parameters because any lower color depths make it look ugly
startx -- -bpp 16
And I have that aliased as just "x" so that after getting in, i just do
that and boom I'm in.
Now I'd like to leave it in runlevel 5 because I'm

Certainly. Do a "man fstab" at a shell prompt to get full details, but
the file /etc/fstab is read on boot time to configure who and how
everything in the system is automatically booted.
