On second thought I might add that all i want to do is either: play wma files in xmms (not mplayer which plays it fine, but has no proper playlist), or transcode this format to something more open-source friendly (ogg or mp3). As far as i can tell from searching, this plugin seems my only option.

How do you open the w32codec-0.18.zip? I can't open it with the Archiver, and it asks for that to be present before I do a make make install. Config files successfully generated by ./configure ! Please check config.h and config.mak files, tune CPU and optimization flags if you don't like these
