I'm surprised that some besides Ann and I still remember what a "cassette
recorder" is.
It's pretty old, perhaps the tubes need time to
Don't need one now that Mark and PJ figured out the problem ...
So in a way, even though there are no tubes - it does need warming up to
run ! :-)

Working units sell for about $15 on eBay. Not worth repairing.

Aye, there's the rub; finding an actual "decent repair shop"!

When you say the power supply is an outlet in your wall, do you mean
it's a standard two or three prong plug or a "wall wort" like this?

If it's a "wall wort", that may be your problem

Nope. I was referring to the power supply internal to the boom box:
Transformer, rectifier diodes, capacitors and several voltage
regulators.

The wall outlet is your power source. Inside the player is a bunch of
electronic gubbins that takes that power and divvies it out to the various
motors, amplifiers
Apparently cassette recorders have become a thing...

There could be a cold break in a solder joint. The electronics don't
need to warm up but the break in the joint needs to warm up to make
contact. It's unlikely but not impossible. I can't think of anything else.

There used to be shops you could take such an item & have it repaired at
a reasonable price. But, no more.
Progress!

Check if power cord is in tight enough.
Sometimes a weak power supply section can do this. Chinese capacitors, like
in many flat-screen TVs ... they go out easily.

Ann, that is very strange indeed. As a former physics major who used to
