While the formats of the files are the same, the Salts used for the crypt functions are not the same. What might you mean by that? I do understand what the salt is for, so are you saying that Solaris uses a different range of characters for the two byte salt? If not what are you saying?

Actually, If you didn't do a su - (with the -), then try that. Otherwise add /sbin to the path in /etc/profile, but be warned this could pose as a security issue with some administrators. You may have to alter the profile scrips to only allow /sbin path for certain UID's or GID's. You can look at
