You're envisioning that pin 1 is on the wrong side of the jack/plug, but

here are hardware and software external modems. (usually the sofware are USB)
Anyway, there is no substitute for 1) finding out if it is a software or
hardware-based modem, and 2) finding out if it will work with your intended
OS and application.

Why the major number change, then? Why not call it RedHat 6.3?
Calling it RedHat 7.0 seems to lead one to believe that there's a change
significant enough to warrant the major number progression. What is that

I use the custom install with RH6.1 and I configure the NIC at that point.
"It didn't work" is pretty vague problem description. Can you ping another
machine from the RH box?
By the way, netcfg may be an easier way to do the network configuration.
