I have a USR internal modem which works fine. However, every once in a blue
moon it will open the line and freeze. It doesn't respond to the ppp daemon
or mincom. If it were external, I'd just power it down. Being internal, the
only think I knew of to do was shutdown the machine, power it off
me!

If your goal to install an internal modem is solely for absorbing know-how
for its installation, browse Linmodem and Lucent technology websites,
download the relevant driver and try to install it according to its manual.
Finally you will get it installed but lot of time may be spent. Otherwise
I recently got a internal modem. It is said to be hardware-basedm, so I
assume it will work with linux.
But I have a winmodem in my machine. How do I install this new one? Should
I treat this new one as a PnP device? or should i reset the jumpers and
make it non-Pnp?
Thanks.

If you get no conflicts under Windows, I don't see why you would have them
under Linux.

Hmm...no problem here on COM4, but I had to make sure to give it a unique,

You can see if Linux recognized it by looking at the output of dmesg.
Just type 'dmesg' at a console and scroll
