I ran sipxecs-setup and did it there as well.

hadn't been there before.
Strangely, I upgraded one of the servers that I reported earlier and after the
upgrade, it's clear as a bell now.

In asterisk, one of the main suggestions for security is to make your SIP user
names different than your extensions.
In sipx, this does not seem to be an option. Anything to be concerned about in
terms of hacking since all of our users are remote.

The point is that it is known to be a good application but it has not, so far,
worked out for me. That doesn't imply that it's not valid.
