Re: [Talk-cz] WeeklyOSM CZ

If the dataset had already been notified to us, or we had approved a derived data exemption application on terms equivalent to OS OpenData terms then members are not expected to do anything (i.e. there is no need to take any retrospective action), as they have already been granted a worldwide, royalty free, perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use the Information. All they need to do is to check that that are attaching the correct acknowledgement to the derived data for the licence they are using. Nonetheless, they can move across to the Open Government Licence (v3) terms if they want to, or (for example) they are refreshing the dataset. This information will be added into the public sector licensing guidance soon. I think it means that new PSMA exemptions will use the OGL by default. For existing ones, the public authority isn't under any obligation to change the licence, but will be able to do so if they want to. I've posted further details/background at http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/notes/os-odl-to-ogl.html It might take some individual contacting of councils etc. to persuade them to change their licences, but in general this is good news. Hopefully OS will issue good guidance to make things as simple as possible for public authorities to understand and act on. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [Talk-it] Differenza no_left_turn only_straight_on
Re: [OSM-talk] Quality of OSM Notes
As for Scout, I talked about this in my diary entry http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mvexel/diary/28208 some time ago - not all of these are going to be useful and there is going to be noise. We're looking at improving the quality of the notes that make it through - which is already a tiny, tiny fraction the notes we get internally. Only through making mistakes do we learn how to get it right - not by not doing it in the first place. I would say it's a stretch to call this a 'huge waste' of our time - as I write this there are only a little over 100 notes posted on OSM through our Scout users. In general I think it should be easier, not harder, to create notes and Ian's onosm is a good example of how to accomplish that. Adding artificial friction makes no sense to me. Less notes should not be an objective, smarter ways to look at them and process them should. What could be done to make notes better? The current top page introduction reads: *Spotted a mistake or something missing? Let other mappers know so we can fix it. Move the marker to the correct position and type a note to explain the problem. (Please don't enter personal information or information from copyrighted maps or directory listings.)* Could there be a multi step form? OSM is easy to edit, and your fellow mappers and community members value contributions. If the number of notes grows faster than the number of mappers, that's a problem. Notes will cease to be useful. There are two solutions: 1) Get more experienced mappers to process notes 2) Increase the friction of creating a note, in hopes that means less notes of higher quality. Thanks martijn for replying. I know it's hard to sort through the mass amount of notes you guys get. I didn't mean to throw you guys under the bus. It's just overwhelming the notes that are out there. I'm glad to hear you guys are still working to improve the quality of your notes. [talk-au] Using roads dataset from data.sa.gov.au
Hi everyone, I have recently been looking at the roads dataset on data.sa.gov.au, and trying to figure out if there is a good way to use it in OSM. One thing I have tried so far is to process the data in a manner that identifies roads that are missing or incorrectly tagged in OSM. The result is a .osm file that contains approximately 20,000 ways from data.sa.gov.au that are either missing or named differently to what is in OSM. The data covers not only SA but also the western 100km of VIC. I don't think that automatically merging this data into OSM would be a good idea, unless anyone knows of a clever way to do that. However I reckon the file could be a valuable source for manual edits. I put a brief description of my work on the wiki: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/South_Australian_Roads I would be interested in other ideas you might have for how to use the source dataset. I should mention that, in the .osm file I have distilled so far, I tried to include only public roads, by excluding any way that does not have a name. About half of the source dataset consists of unnamed ways, which seem to be a combination of private access roads and driveways, and rural tracks. Perhaps some of this data could be useful in OSM too.

? Les fameux name:left et name:right ? Cordialement, « Ano59 ».

The result is a .osm file that contains approximately 20,000 ways from data.sa.gov.au that are either missing or named differently to what is in OSM. The data covers not only SA but also the western 100km of VIC. I don’t think that automatically merging this data into OSM would be a good idea, unless anyone knows of a clever way to do that. [OSM-talk] Mapping of temporary features/conditions
Hello, I am preparing a talk to introduce new mappers to OSM. I want to provide them some guidance as to what general things we map and don't map. The beginners guide provides much of this. One thing that is not addressed is the mapping of temporary features/conditions. It seems common sense to me that we don't map very temporary things, such as cars in parking lots or snow cover (unless it is a year-round snow field or glacier). However, I cannot find anything on the wiki that explicit states this. I did read the wiki page for the crop=* key[1] which states it is recommended that this tag only be used for areas where the same crop is repeatedly (e.g. grown year after year). Otherwise it is easy for the value to become inaccurate in OSM. This seems to support my point, albeit only for the specific case of crops. I also read the wiki page on the temporary:date_on=* tag[2] which seems to suggest some temporary things can be mapped, but they should be tagged as such. A) Is there agreement to generally not map most temporary features/conditions? B) Is this explicitly documented on the wiki? Can someone provide me a link? In general feel that more friction should be added to the notes process, so it's harder to make a note, so there are less notes.

PY ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
Re: [Talk-us] Why does the USA currently lag in OSM map quality?
Here are two examples of mapping communities NOT in OSM: http://labyrinthlocator.com/ http://www.sanidumps.com/ To help find USA http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/148838 mappers: I've resolved to start including links to OSM in any location related email I send :-). ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [OSM-talk] Quality of OSM Notes
Hi Bryce, I don't think people read the text above OSM's notes submission form anyway. I fall in to the camp of less is better. Mapbox blogged about how they do it recently. I really like the big describe what's wrong header as it achieves so much in so few words (and I'm sure if it made sense without it mapbox would drop the word what's too :-) ). I wonder if the mapbox guys have a breakdown of the notes they receive - what is their quality note to junk ratio? https://www.mapbox.com/blog/streamlining-map-feedback/ Best, Rob ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
