O OpenOffice e o FireFox vêm, por padrão, em inglês. Pelo menos na minha
máquina eles foram instalados em inglês. Mas dá para baixar as traduções via
Synaptic.
Estraho porque na instalação do Dapper (6.06.1) você seleciona
português no Live e ele instala tudo em pt_BR.

No Dapper eu não lembro, mas no Edgy eu selecionei o idioma no início ele

I can read and mount SD cards but I think the integrated smartcard reader uses
the same chip but nothing happens.

I only get this error sometimes, most of the time it starts playing
something there... but without audio or video output. When running with
mplayer (look up the correct URL in the page sources) I get at least
sound... so really a GStreamer problem, I'll forward it upstream

Well, the error is in it for some time already :/ I can still reproduce the
bugger time and time again.
I solved it by making the config file read only. It isn't a very decent way
of fixing the problem, but it seems that the grubdevelopers from Ubuntu
don't have any interests in solving this
