I know about the Nouvoeau driver in Lucid but after Jaunty, the newer
Ubuntu version use at least 100-150 mb more RAM than Jaunty, Intrepid,
Hardy and so on. And this computer is really old after all.

It's almost like there's a second routine running that's locking the
screen, and this is being applied over top of the value set in
Screensaver Preferences.
I just noticed my screensaver also seems to activate a bit too early. I

the latest version (2:8.723.0ubuntu4) is identical (brief flash in

Chris Wilson's patch on bugzilla fixes the crash just fine.
That leaves an intermittent crash somewhere in the Privates system, but
given that's been substantially redone for 1.9 I'm not sure I want to

Hm. Does adding “blacklist vga16fb” to the kernel command line make the
pointer work for that boot? We had problems early in the 10.04
development cycle which got triggered by the interaction of vga16fb and
lshw -C.
