Unsure if this will do what your after but how about creating a frame that contains the text. Anchor the frame with the graphic to the first character text frame. With the right wrap settings you don't get overlap and other frames are 'pushed' out of the way if placed on top of them.. Graphic

OOo is not fully compatible with word, so this kinds of things is expected. Pictures are compressed to wmf I think in word, so the more pictures there is, the more likely that the .doc document is smaller than the .sxw, I think. About that your pictures are not visible: When importing them,
