Have you tried to use Windows Explorer or My Computer's Open With function?
Right click the file you want to open
click on property (not open with at this point)
then use the open with options.
This may work. If you click on a *.DOC
and associate it with Open Office, then the

Also in My computer or Windoes Explorer (which I use mostly)
click on TOOLS
FOLDER OPTIONS
scroll down to DOC
and then do a CHANGE for programs to open that file extention.
