As I said, that .docx has problems even in Word 2008. Can't tell
whether that's due to careless composition or to differences in
rendering in the Windows vs. OSX versions

It will automagically replace an older 3.x version. It will not affect
1.x or 2.x versions.

use the WIN-Explorer
select the tabulator filetype - in the list with registered filetypes
- you will find the extension von MS-Word - change this to writer and
this files will allways open with OO-Writer.

configurate the application to open attachments - I know only the
described form with WIN-Explorer where the file-extension ist linked to
the application.

I'm using the newest seamonkey 2.0a3 and although in the former versions
your tip worked only when I didn't assign the fileextions to an
application. I'm know that other email-clients have such properties, but
seamonkey have some more features as composer and the browser so I use
