Earlier iPhones used the entire processor for these functions,
facilitating faster batter
If a GPS app is not running in the background, it will not use battery.
If it is running in the background, it will use Cellular data; though not a
huge amount, but you probably should be aware that you will be using cellular
data while traveling with a GPS app active.
You could do a test, chec
If you remove them from the app switcher and allow them to use your locations
only when you are using the app then theoretically they shouldn't.

I've got apple care+ with theft and loss that I now pay $10 per month for. So
when I need to get a new battery, it shouldn't cost me anything. I have to go
to best buy for any apple work on my iPhone.
