If VO-K doesn't work for whatever reason, you can always use four-finger-double-tap to turn on help mode, and use it again to toggle it off. For what it's worth, the Amazon basics keyboard has held up the longest of all my keyboards, and it uses triple-A batteries, which seem to last forever.
