Adding affects to text messages.

I just read Chris's wonderful instructions on how to add an effect to a text message. I tried double tapping and holding on the send button, but the pop-up screen does not seem to come up or if it does I'm not noticing it. How do I find the pop-up screen to select the effect? Liz Ulrich and
