I very, very much like steves idea..... -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: November 23, 2001 9:52 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [STN] The floppy thing ...
For my part, I have nothing against floppies per se. I feel it is the SINGLE floppy barrier that is holding things up. It seems obvious that one could not have two or more floppies for an unattended boot, as is possible currently with the single floppy, so that is where the HDU has to come in. Would it not be possible to use floppies built on a Windows machine to prepare a HDU and install STN on it? Linux based STN competitors do just that. Could you not assume a dedicated IDE HDU exists within the STN machine, not necessarily of any particular format, and use a combination of floppies to format the HDU if required, install the Linux fundamentals (cut down is still very good for security) and then the STN nice bits like the web interface, in a similar fashion to that in which you use the ramdisk now? Once installed the machine could boot unattended from the HDU if need be, floppies put away for future disasters. My level of technical competence means I must use big hands on little maps, and I know this is a very high level suggestion, but it does seem possible with a couple of additional formatting clevers, and not a lot of directional change. It realy is the simplicity of configuration and the basic security and reliability of STN that makes it shine, even now. I still recommend it. I would not be at all surprised to see a resurgence of popularity if things like IPSEC were possible using STN, and I would endorse an upgrade fee for a generational release.
