OK...
Make the new STN(HD) such that I can install squid myself!
I mean, can you think of a better place to put a proxy??? Dial-out is
likely the lowest-end, least cycle-consuming process you can run. Unless
you specifically re-compile the 2.x.x kernel, you can't even RUN it on a
386, and who has 386s sitting around now? So let's continue this to a
logical, yet realistic conclusion. You're gonna have a minimum 486 machine
with lets say 16 MB RAM. That's about a bottom-line as you can get now.
Let's say you have a 100MB HardDrive. Put say 80MB of that HardDrive to
work as a proxy. It'll speed up your customers' access and provide MUCH
more bang for the buck.
Now if you go with a P-100 and 128MB of RAM and say 500MB diskspace, you
could support a medium sized office' internet requirements. Proper
configuration would even allow web site hosting speed up. This type of
"advance" configuration might call for a separate proxy box, but for simple
gateway services, hanging squid off the back of STN(HD) is a natural
combination and would provide tremendous returns! Besides, STN already
offers all the config parameters a standard client would need via DHCP.
