I have a school with classrooms that have a ceiling of 8'. there is a soffit along one wall that is 10" lower than the ceiling and 36" wide. I am drawing a blank as to whether I need sprinklers in the soffit. 8.6.4.1.1.3 says that if the difference in heights in the ceiling is less than 36", I can consider it a flat ceiling. 8.6.5.1.2 (3) limits the soffit to 30" in width. I can comply with table 8.6.5.1.2 and be less than 7'6 away from the wall. So can I eliminate sprinklers in the soffits?
