Bobby: If you had a soffit that was 4" deep and 40" long, you wouldn't need a head under it if you can position the sprinkler to throw under it. I believe that you have to either comply with the beam rule, or the soffit rule (if you have a soffit that is <30"). However, I could easily be wrong on that.
