The reason the ball valves were approved for R systems was the statement that backflows are approved with them. This is NOT the case. There have always been backflows listed without the ball valves. One maker uses LBV(less ball valves) as the designator. I have many times had the ball valves removed and the gate/butterball installed. I do not ever remember being limited on backflows because of ball valves. I personally think the ball valves should go away, and stay gone.
