there has been some work several years
after this by McGrattan (of the same group
as Cooper, whom retired therefrom), Stroup,
Madrzykowski, Hamins that did not state
such a doubly-negative appraisel.

sure, smoke venting can help firefighters find
the seat of a fire in high-piled storage. But if
visibility is THAT bad in there to begin with,
the fire command officer should think long and
hard about sending firefighters inside.

High-piled storage (without ESFR) almost
always needs firefighters to finish the suppression.
but there are plenty of occassions where they
should not be sending firefighters into high-piled
storage where the sprinklers systems simply
did not do their job...either by design, or
management changing their use, or by
lack of maintenance. Smoke logged high-piled
storage is an application where IR vision would
be a real benefit. We lost firefighters in Charleston
on such a scenario, did we not?

Personally, I think the utility of smoke venting large
open-plan spaces with high-piled storage is
so marginal, that we will not be able to get a clear and vivid
picture painted of their outstanding character.
