It's always unfortunate there is not an easily accessible database
that has definitions/descriptions of the rationale behind any given
rule. For instance: why are residential heads required? I'd guess a
couple of reasons. You want quick response in the typical residential
application since we're worried about life safety as much as, if not
more than, property protection and all residential heads are quick
response. We also find combustible loading around the perimeter more
in residential than in say ban office where the loading tends to be
evenly distributed and that may a account for the flatter spray
pattern. But that's a guess. I also guess that we use old style heads
in fur vaults because the room itself (desiccated cedar) is as
combustible as the contents. Since a sauna, particularly a dry one, is
more like mini fur vault than a living room, and if my guess is
correct, than maybe an old style head would be the most appropriate.
High temp of course but would there really be the need for quick
response (conscious person in a small room without partitions)? So it
would be nice to be able to find out the reasons for the rules when
you encounter a situation not addressed directly but similar to
something else. And I'll bet that this house with a sauna and a steam
room and (if the same house as the other post) an elevator is a little
bigger than the committee was considering as appropriate for a13D but
I can't know because there's no reasonable way to find out. And by the
way, is this one of those sprinkler systems that are going to make the
house too expensive for someone to buy?
