So it looks like NFPA 101 is permissive if it's effective but the IFC 904
requires specific AHJ approval. Of course the AHJ in 101 would have to
agree it's effective so I guess it's not given really. Also note the real
catch in 904 and you might have a problem if say for example you take the
area increase for sprinklers and use a clean agent in the sever
room..."Automatic fire-extinguishing systems shall not be considered
alternatives for the purposes of exceptions or reductions allowed by other
requirements of this code."

Subject: RE: Gas systems replacing sprinklers

Look at NFPA 101 (2000, edition) 9.7.3.1

In any occupancy where the character of the potential fuel for fire is such
that extinguishment or control of fire is effectively accomplished by a type
of automatic extinguishing system other than an automatic sprinkler system,
such as water mist, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, foam, Halon 1301, water
spray, or a standard extinguishing of another type, that system shall be
permitted to be installed in lieu of an automatic sprinkler system. Such
systems shall be installed, inspected, and maintained in accordance with
appropriate NFPA standards.

Subject: Gas systems replacing sprinklers

Does anyone know if NFPA specifically states that a gas fire suppression
system can replace a fire sprinkler in a room, or rooms? I scanned and
searched and the only section it addresses that issue is in marine systems
25.1.5, partial systems. Section 1.5 possibly covers it but convincing a
fire marshall of that could be a bit tough. Thanks.
