I agree with Brad on this one. The code says that it is acceptable as long as "each unprotected ceiling pocket is separated from any adjacent unprotected pocket by a minimum 10 feet horizontal distance" 13 2007 8.6.7.2 (4)
It seems like a protected ceiling pocket would not get in the way of this requirement. The recesses are required to be separated by at least 10 feet so any delay caused by the height of the pocket would not have an impact.
