Thanks Roland. Please let me briefly explain my modeling game plan, so I can
get some suggestions for improvement, or "don't waste our time- the heat
will go up". For the case of the 2' perimeter open to above, the velocity of
the ceiling jet will be say, 10 ft/sec, get to the opening, go up, and then,
obeying what I now call The Law of Roland's Momentum, bounce off the wall
and move back toward the middle above the ceiling. This is what scares me
about a firm number like 15', 24', and especially something times the square
root of the design area below. Call that number X. Call the height of the
low ceiling Z1, and the dimension from the low ceiling to the bottom of the
deck Z2. I want to see how X varies as a function of Z1, Z2, the area of the
opening, and the cube of the space above, over time.

Btw what does ROP stand for?

We submitted a proposal attempting to get the TC to define how big a
gap is too big. We started with allowing no more than 6 inches
without sprinklers above the drop ceiling. The ROP meeting is early
Feb.
