Check with the architect or structural engineer. Notwithstanding sleeving to
comply with seismic or thru penetration fire stopping requirements a sleeve
acts as a lintel transferring a load around the nonstructural item. The IBC
provides the following, specifically an opening wider than 12 inches.

2009 IBC

2104.1.4 Chases and recesses.
Chases and recesses shall be constructed as masonry units are laid. Masonry
directly above chases or recesses wider than 12 inches (305 mm) shall be
supported on lintels.

2104.1.5 Lintels.
The design for lintels shall be in accordance with the masonry design
provisions of either Section 2107 or 2108.

2107.1 General. The design of masonry structures using allowable stress
design shall comply with Section 2106 and the requirements of Chapters 1 and
2 of TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5 except as modified by Sections 2107.2 through
2107.5.

2108.1 General. The design of masonry structures using strength design shall
comply with Section 2106 and the requirements of Chapters 1 and 3 of TMS
402/ACI 530/ASCE
5, except as modified by Sections 2108.2 through 2108.3.

Thank you, I even checked 2006 IBC and all I could find was section 711 /
712 which was talking about rated walls.

Thanks again.

The word sleeve only appears four times in NFPA 13, 2007.
9.3.4.2 (2-times)
22.1(22)
A.3.9.5.7 related to the covering over rolled paper.

Thank you, just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything before I
argued. We have a state fire marshal that likes to see sleeves in all
block/concrete walls and I had brought this up before we started the project
to try and remedy it. They said they would be willing to look into the
requirements, instead of what they usually ask for, and admitted it may not
be per code but they have always just asked for it. I expressed that 95% of
the walls are not rated and it would be unnecessary. We are supposed to talk
more about it tomorrow and I just wanted to be prepared.

Thank you,

No requirement for sleeves in 13, just clearance.

Not saying the architect or other entity may have a requirement for sleeves
so check the specs if there are any.

Subject: Pipe Sleeves

We have an existing school we are sprinkling. When we pass through a block
wall, non-rated (smoke, fire etc.) we plan on providing clearance or a flex
coupling within a foot of the wall on both sides of the wall. Does it say
anywhere we have to use sleeves for block walls? We will be using Sch. 10 &
40 pipe as well as CPVC. I can't seem to find anything other than NFPA 13 -
2007 9.3.4.3 "Where clearance is provided by a pipe sleeve.." But nothing
requiring one.

Thank you in advance.
