Ron,
I had the same thought George did, because the question Ralphy asked was
about "residential" sprinklers. This paragraph came to mind:
8.10.3.3 The minimum distance between sprinklers within a
compartment shall be 8 ft (2.44 m), unless the listing of the
sprinkler requires a greater distance and unless required by
8.10.7.1.5.1.
So, I have to say I'm with George on this one, the minimum spacing
between them must be at least 8'-0".

I don't think so if your design basis is 18x18 and the small (I'm
seeing a dog leg off the living room for the kitchen) compartment
directly communicates with the larger no matter how small the smaller
compartment is. 18x18 rules throughout. Now if it's a separate
compartment, with at least the lintel, then that rule wouldn't
necessarily apply.

Ohhh, couldn't the heads be 8' from each other if 8' is the min spacing?

You can space them at anything you want up to and not less than the
maximum/minimum spacing you're calculating for. Since minimum is 1/2 S
18x18 can't exceed 18' between heads, nor more than 9' from the wall, nor be
closer than 9' feet to an adjacent head. just make sure the kitchen head is
nine feet from the adjacent living room head(s) and it's an 18x18 too.

Is it permissable to space residential heads at two different areas of
coverages in the same compartment? Case: a living room making use of 18x18
spacing while the kitchen next to it (without a lintel or anything) is spaced
at 16x16. This is a 13 system (not 13R) and when calculating I'm wondering if I
can calc them according to this method. I know the larger demand will end up
driving the calculations - just want to make sure with this...
Thanks,RB
