I hate to break it to you, but that's not how management works. A manager doesn't need to know the union of all the knowledges of his subordinates. He needs to know how to make good decisions and motivate people to get things done. That's what makes him more valuable.
Part of a manager's job is to delegate stuff to experts who know the nitty-gritty details of things that would just bog him down. A good manager does know critical details for his business, but no manager knows everything, nor should he. He's a manager, not an encyclopedia.
