I have tried it. I used one of the fanless massive zalman heatsinks. It did work, but it was pretty close to the edge. As dust builds up, airflow changes etc the system was getting unstable. Not a good place to be. I eventually went with the zalman that has a large heatsink and a slow very quiet fan. It works perfectly and is very quiet. I have to be within 6" of the case to hear it. The suspended disk actually makes more noise.
