>I would do the whole thing as a single SDS object I did that (SDS) too all in C4D. Worked well enough to make a tube between only two spheres. But when I added complexity (tubes to multiple spheres, or at odd angles) the SDS way became much more tedious than the NURBS way. As the complexity grew, NURBS seemed to be a better way to do it.
