I have a very limited skillset in CG but to model the image you show I would do the whole thing as a single SDS object starting with a shift-cube then smooth, then extend the arms and create the spheres at the ends given three or four control node/point sets along the arms to allow bend/rotation ... this would allow diameter controls for the "arms" ... there wouldnt be any artifacts.
