Same here. Web based forums are absolutely unusable unless you only
use them very seldom.

I think the reason is the one you said earlier: since mailing lists
are muuuuch more effective than web forums (especially for people who
must communicate online a lot) if the only channel to provide support
is a web forum less support comes from it.
